Sir John Lavery RA RSA RHA (20 March – 10 January ) was an Irish painter best known for his portraits and wartime depictions.
Life and career
John Lavery was born in inner North Belfast, on 20 March and baptised at St Patrick's Church, Belfast. While still a child, he moved to Scotland where he attended Haldane Academy in Glasgow in the s.[1] In , he set up his own studio which was razed in a fire in the following year. With a £ insurance pay-out, he spent a year studying at Heatherley's School in London.[2] Lavery continued his studies at the Académie Julian[1] in Paris in the early s. He returned to Glasgow and was associated with the Glasgow School.
